Skincare Series: 3 Essential Skincare Tips for 50-Somethings
It’s hard to avoid the telltale signs of aging skin by the time you reach your 50s. Even if you’ve been diligent about maintaining a good skincare regimen—with little to no unprotected sun exposure—chances are you’ll still experience dryness, wrinkles, andhyperpigmentation (i.e. dark spots). Make sure you’re following these three key tips to keep your skin looking its best.
1. Make Sure You’re Always Moisturizing
It’s more important than ever to make sure you’re keeping your skin hydrated. Both daytime and nighttime moisturizers are a must, as is a cleanser that removes dirt, oil, and makeup—and gently exfoliates—and without stripping your skin. We love NARS Gentle Cream Cleanser, $29, which also contains soothing ingredients such as wild rose extract, chamomile, and monoi oil.
2. Look for Products with AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and Vitamin C
Don’t let the word “acid” scare you—alpha hydroxy acids (which include glycolic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid) are naturally occurring compounds that exfoliate and increase cell turnover, which helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C is a skin brightener that’s extremely effective for lightening dark spots. Try paring the AHA-packed Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Crème, $50, with the spot-fading Ole Henriksen Pure Truth Vitamin C Youth Activating Oil, $45.
3. Get an RX
Retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, are another key ingredient for younger-looking skin. There are many effective over-the-counter products that contain retinoids, including REN Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Cream, $65. But some of the most effective formulations require a prescription (think Retin-A). Talk to your dermatologist about what options might work best for your skin type, keeping in mind that dryness is often a common side effect.
