Skincare Series: 3 Essential Skincare Tips for 40-Somethings

skincare 40s

Women in their 40s typically need products that will minimize, refine, and correct existing skincare woes such as wrinkles, crow’s feet, and uneven skin tone. You can fight these common problems, which crop up as a result of both age and hormonal changes, by incorporating these three tips into your regular routine.

1. Start Seeing Your Dermatologist Regularly

If you aren’t seeing a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin exam, book an appointment ASAP. It’s also good to check in regularly about less harmful—but very pesky—problems such as redness, acne, and fine lines and wrinkles. Many women find minimally invasive treatments like injections (Botox), fillers, and lasers or peels to work wonders smoothing out skin and evening tone.

2. Zap Zits the Right Way

Murad

Plenty of women still struggle with acne in their 40s. But the main ingredient in many spot treatments is benzoyl peroxide, which can dry out your skin and create more fine lines and wrinkles over time. Ditch the harsh zit zappers and start using a gentle cleanser with 1% to 2% salicylic acid, such as Murad Time Release Acne Cleanser, $32. If your breakouts are severe or cystic, speak with a dermatologist, who can prescribe an appropriate treatment for your skin type.

3. Don’t Forget Your Neck!

Ole

During this decade, women often notice that the skin around the neck starts to get crepey and sag, which is typically due to age and estrogen loss. Make sure you treat your décolletéto the same kinds of anti-aging products that you use on your face. This includes moisturizers and/or serums (we recommend Ole Henriksen Ultimate Lift Neck Crème, $48), plenty of sunscreen, and an exfoliating scrub at least twice a week.
