Designer Spotlight: Self Portrait by Han Chong
Launched a few shorts years ago, Self Portrait by Han Chong captures and conveys the ultimate la femme moderne.
A contemporary collection artfully and consistently full of lace, peekaboo striping, corsets and, cutouts, Chong dexterously defines Self Portrait’s aesthetic along with his customer.
Flattering, ladylike silhouettes are updated with partially lined mesh and lace alongside partially exposed mesh and lace. Avant-garde details such as high-waisted peplums and sharp angled shoulders blended with tea-lengths and sweetheart necklines simultaneously evoke an image of Grace Jones and Grace Kelly. At first glance, one can only assume his creative genius is inspired by Dolce & Gabbana as well as Jil Sander with a sprinkling of Michael Kors. Though inspired by his peers, Hong is a true original, successfully turning out head turning dresses and separates, all fabulously wearable, all fabulously affordable.
