Spring/Summer Fashion Week 2016 Trends – Paris Edition

paris

Wearability and practicality often don’t appear in the same sentence as Paris Fashion Week.  We expect big, boisterous declarations of artful, dramatic fashion, particularly from a city that showcases Haute Couture shows like it’s normal daily wear. But surprisingly some (not every one, it’s still Paris after all!) shows asserted that clothing should be for the everyday girl.  That’s not to say these were plain designs.  In fact, the opposite is true.  A touch of sparkle here, a hint of decoration there, extravagant embellishments and intricate details were cleverly styled and designed to appear as normal wear, but in reality were extraordinarily chic. The theory is simple – casual elegance allows the same girl to go from day to night thanks in part to trends like modernized cocktail jackets, reimagined jumpsuits, 9-5 dresses and so many fancy trousers your head will spin.  Once again, PFW closed out a fashion month with a surge of unexpected pieces that begs the question – do we really have to wait ‘til spring?

The New Normal – From office appropriate maxis to easy weekend throw-ons, the hero piece in your closet next spring will be the wear-anywhere-go-everywhere dress.  And don’t worry, these dresses are just as fabulous as we imagined – plaid patterns, gauzy textures, killer pleats, fluid fabrics and 70’s styles.

Dries Van Noten Fancy Pants

Elie Saab Fancy Pants

Fancy Pants – On the other side of the spectrum, pants received the most impressive makeover and are quickly making their way up the ranks to LBD status.  Sexy lace, cascading ruffles, oversized bows and unexpected textiles are just a few of the standouts.

Lanvin Evening Standard

Evening Standard – We all love a good cocktail dress, but a cocktail parka? From the striped and floral appliqued creations at Dior to the not-so-basic-black number at Lanvin, these party coats are equal parts functional and sophisticated.

Balenciaga Jump Around

Chloe Jump Around

Louis Vuitton Jump Around

Jump Around – We’ve seen the jumpsuit fancified for a number of seasons now, but pushing them into our every day life in a variety of wearable fabrics, styles and textures just replaced our normal go-tos. Seems like our jeans’n’tshirt combo just got booted to the back of our closet.

Silver Linings Playbook – Repeat this phrase – silver is appropriate at any time of day and for any occasion.  See Loewe’s flashy textured trousers, Moncler Gamme Rouge’s foiled frock and Isabel Marant’s casual pants for the most stunning examples.
