How to be a Street Style Star During Fashion Month

Fashion Star

At the end of every Fashion Week, we sift through hundreds of street style pics to select which fashionista really stole the show.  Well technically, the show outside the actual shows.  The catwalk may be for the designers, but the sidewalk is for the street style stars that know just the right styling tricks to be constant bait for photogs.  So just exactly how do you become the Blonde Salad or the infamous ADR? The truth lies in the details.  Think well-balanced combinations of color, accessories and trending pieces to create wow moments.  If you follow our tutorial below, by this time next month, you’ll be the one making the fashion headlines.

Mix Master – Patterns and tactile fabrics are always a match made in fashion heaven.  Pile on au courant prints that work with each other, like the modern magpie and retro motifs, then finish it off with a complementary textural piece, such as croc-effect leather or embellished suede. Temper the look with a classic print like leopard or python on your accessories, to really drive the point home and keep the look polished, not kitschy.

Rainbow Bright – There’s validity behind the theory the bolder, the better. The key is to know what color pairings create statements versus which ones become too costume-y.  Start with simple color coordination – greens and blues go together, as do pinks and red, oranges and yellows, etc.  Then build on that by throwing in unexpected elements – an embroidered fabric, a dimensional piece and a notice-me accessory. Both high impact additions push the look into head-turning status.

Basic Instinct – Basics are anything but boring.  Just because you want to slip on a tee, jeans and flats doesn’t mean you won’t standout.  A true style star knows how to assemble all her go-to pieces in the most sophisticated way.  Accessories and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it styling tricks are the real secrets to make a basic look become extraordinarily fabulous. Go full fledged denim on denim, but opt for the hot-right-now patchwork print, then half tuck your shirt, roll that sleeve just right and only commit to one fold on your jeans.  And never forget that a playful pair of flats will complete the look.
