Spring / Summer Fashion Week 2015 Trends – Milan Edition

Milan

Discreet? Never. Subdued? Not a chance. Casual? Don’t you even go there. Words we never thought we’d utter in the same sentence as Milan Fashion Week have officially shocked us.  Never did we think Milan, the glamazon of the Big Four Fashion Weeks, would be referenced as modest or understated, but the Spring Summer ’15 shows taught as that predictability would be a fool’s errand. In the most strikingly directional way, luxe denim, subliminal sex appeal and bohemian elegance pounced the runways.  Sure, there were occasional sparkly numbers or indulgent cuts to hemlines, but we give a standing ovation to Milan for reiterating once again to always expect the unexpected.

Put a Robe on It – The cinched waist. London and New York showcased it, but Milan took it down a slightly different path, featuring robes inspired by Japanese kimonos, judo belts, neutral palettes and sculptural arms.

Fit to Be Tied – Lace might be the fabric that exudes sex and seduction, but laces are moving up the ranks as a key design element putting a playful spin on peek-a-boo details.

The Haight Ashbury Era – While London Fashion Week went to Studio 54 for a dip back into the 70’s, Milan dove straight into hippiedom. Fringed out ponchos, suede knee high boots and tie-dyed dresses mirrored a Summer of Love bohemian modernity.

The Dog Days of Denim – No longer a humble fabric, denim’s day in the spotlight just keeps going, thanks in part to Alberta Ferretti, Gucci as well as Dolce & Gabbana.  Whether they were cropped, accented with lace or bedecked with rhinestones (don’t sweat that word just yet), we officially were given the go ahead that the once working man’s fabric has now been catapulted to luxe status.
